About Me

I'M NYSSA!

I was awarded Bachelor’s Degree (magna cum laude) in Studio Art from Eastern Oregon University, and skated out with enough credits to have three minors in French, Russian and Anthropology. I have been a freelance copy and developmental editor for 10 years, have worked as a professional photographer in an old time photography studio, and I have been obsessed with belly dancing since 1986.

I was introduced to this art through the Society of Creative Anachronism and have spent countless hours sleeping in tents, attending historical reenactments, alarming local mundanes during random weekend events in their area, and partaking of home brewed mead, Turkish coffee and all manner of tomfoolery and other nearly forgotten skills. I also possess a horrific addiction to used bookstores.  I get twitchy if I don't get out into the world often enough, for adventures both large and small.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Inspiration

My earliest work drew its influence from Wendy and Richard Pini's flagship work: Elfquest. As a teenager you could not keep me from those graphic novels and I compulsively purchased each one as I found it and guarded them with my life.

Other perennial seeds of artistic expression stem from my love of the human form, and human sexuality in all its boundless articulations and deviations. I marvel at the eternal ebb and flow of the natural dichotomy of land and sea, storms and calm, masculine and feminine, darkness and light.

Techniques

While much of my 2D work is line driven and is created with a dip pen and acrylic ink using water color techniques, I occasionally deviate into acrylic or oil paint, ceramics, intricate wire beaded body jewelry, or photography. These elements are frequently referenced within the various bodies of work that I produce.

Career Highlights

I had the privilege to be awarded Best in Show for a ceramic belly dance costume made out of hand- crafted shards held together with crochet. I blurred the lines between fine art and craft and dance and followed this accomplishment with my capstone exhibit the next year.

During that year I fired between ten and twelve thousand shards in varying sizes, shapes and colors and fashioned them into twenty five individual costumes which were displayed on paper mache busts in the gallery.  Several were worn by models during the opening of the exhibit.

"Read everything.  It doesn't do you much good to draw unless you have something to draw. The only place you're going to get anything to draw is from out of that head."  -Chuck Jones
